Using Candles in Self Care

Caring for ourselves means nurturing all aspects of our being – our physical body, our spiritual self, our emotional life and our mental health. When we neglect to care for any of these aspects of our lives, we may feel the effects in all of them manifested in anxiety, depression, irritability, lack of interest, lack of energy, sleep disturbance,  isolation, weight changes, constipation, stomach aches, headaches, inflammation, and more.

Life can be hectic. Many days we rush around and try to be all things to all people. We work hard for our bosses or to keep our businesses running smoothly, we keep our homes clean, laundry done, food in the house, and meals prepared for our families. Not to mention the demands of children, spouses/boyfriends/girlfriends, parents, siblings, friends, and pets. Oh yeah, and don’t forget about paying bills, volunteering, appointments, house maintenance, yard work, car maintenance, holidays….

Our sense of smell is powerful. Scents can uplift our mood, energize us, reduce stress and anxiety, remind us of positive experiences and memories, help us focus, and help us slow our pace. In fact, I started learning to make candles to help me focus on a useful, creative activity to help get me through a painful life experience, burning my own candles as I learned to make them. Burning candles can become part of relaxing habits and routines that show ourselves love and care.

Aromatherapy candles are infused with beneficial essential oils that can help induce a sense of well-being, relieve stress, anxiety and depression, improve focus and energy, and promote feelings of relaxation. Check out our ever growing Aromatherapy candle collection.

Ways to incorporate candles into your self care routines:

  1. Meditate

Burning candles during meditation helps strengthen our focus, intentions, and manifestations. It is so important to allow time for our minds to rest.

Candle suggestions: Palo Santo, Sandalwood, Lavender,  Serenity.

  1. Take a bath

After a long day, a hot, soothing bath can help to ease our aching bodies, help us unwind, and restore a sense of calm and tranquility.

Set up a few candles in your bathroom to create a soothing home spa atmosphere. Candles can help add to the sense of peace and relaxation.

Candle suggestions: Eucalyptus, Lavender, Stress Relief, Teakwood.

      3. Read

Reading is a perfect way to incorporate rest and relaxation into our day while we escape into other worlds and lives, dive into history, discover something new, and deepen our knowledge. Brew a pot of tea or coffee, light a candle, open a book and escape for awhile.

Candle suggestions: Coffee, Caramel Macchiato, Lemon Cake, Banana Bread.

  1. Exercise/Stretch/Yoga

Physical exercise is a perfect way to show ourselves love and care. Developing a regular home exercise routine can benefit all aspects of our health and help us become stronger, more flexible, reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, improve sleep, help us lose weight, relieve constipation, reduce the risk of diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and lower blood pressure, while increasing our confidence and sense of well-being. Consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine to make sure the exercise you choose is safe for you.

Candle suggestions:  Equanimity, Eucalyptus, Free Spirit, Grapefruit.

Burning candles can provide an opportunity for us to listen to our own voices, to let go of expectations, time constraints, competition, and frenzied paces. Give yourself the gift of slowing the rhythm down and unplugging for a little while. Light a candle, meditate, take a bath, curl up with a good book, drink a glass of wine or tea or coffee, watch a movie, move your body. Bask in the glow.

Be sweet to yourself.
